A les nostres ciutats, la pregunta és, quin paisatge arquitectònic ens interessa... És que l’hi pregunten mai això a la gent?! El estil per tradició és molt eclèctic a Catalunya i sobretot a Barcelona, prima massa lo ultra modern, per ser el factor principal l’estalvi de costos sense respecte a la valuosa arquitectura autòctona, essència d’Europa. Les següents generacions no entendran que haguem fet servir l’espai urbà com a laboratori de disseny. Els exemples son varis i contundents: ÉS QUE ENS ESTALVIEM LA BELLESA?. Per exemple en el cas de l’auditori, mana la funcionalitat acústica interior per a una façana obertament hostil i aspra. Aquesta és la feina dels urbanistes i arquitectes, però hi han múltiples opcions per l’embelliment: per exemple un retorn al Classicisme, al Romànic, al Gòtic, o al Modernisme per ser estils històrics d’aquesta terra. Desitjable seria amb paràmetres sostenibles, és a dir amb materials nobles com la fusta, la pedra natural i major predomini del verd, que ho faria molt més acollidor i relaxant. No estem parlant de un estil idealista, però si de millorar la estètica de cara als habitants i disminuir llur estrès visual, ja de per si considerable per la alta densitat de població. Hi ha poc compromís amb l’art heretat de forma patrimonial, com antigues faroles i façanes irrecuperables… S’ha de donar un pas més enllà cap el respecte de lo genuí, tornant a les fonts originals de inspiració, si cal buscant els mitjans per finançar-ho, com amb espònsors privats. Es preguntaran Vostès perquè, ja que la afinitat estètica es quelcom molt subjectiu, conformes, però es tracta aquí de no decantar-se per a un estil o l’altre, si no de evitar la manca d’estil que no volem, que inclús agredeix la nostra sensibilitat, quan no la integritat física. Administració: no és evident que hem de afavorir la qualitat de vida, proveint un manteniment regular i adequat a totes aquestes les obres? No parlem de establir un nou patró estètic, ja tenim el pla mestre de l’Eixample. Es innegable el caràcter vertical de la nostra capital, donat el seu poc espai disponible, però es poden dissenyar i conjuntar edificis tant més harmoniosos en les seves línies i us, en benefici dels ciutadans que els han de fer viure, no suportar. No oblidem el cas de un conegut gratacels al port, que va haver de aplicar una sèrie de reformes estructurals per llei, donada la electricitat electrostàtica que generaven les seves instal·lacions. Hi ha hagut indemnització de cara als usuaris perjudicats? Com ho anomenem aquest absurd, ciutadans al servei de les construccions...? En altres països ja haguessin obligat a refer-lo, poder..

El Silencio… Ese lujo tan preciado

De pequeño me enseñaron en la escuela francesa: “el silencio es de oro, la palabra de plata”. Más adelante me fascinaron los reportajes submarinos llamados “El Mundo del Silencio” del gran oceanógrafo, el comandante Jacques-Yves Cousteau, arropado por un medio tan envolvente y sereno… Supongo que me acostumbré a un nivel de tranquilidad acústica que siempre veo difícil de encontrar en las sociedades latinas, especialmente en las meridionales. En éstas, se confunde fiesta i animación con caos acústico. A la mayoría de la gente de por aquí parece no importarle, a mí mucho. Creo firmemente, que en los establecimientos públicos y sobre todo en los turísticos, el personal de servicio se debería de esmerar en respetar una acústica confortable y respetuosa para el entorno de la clientela, ya que gran parte de ella le otorga mucho valor. ¿Cómo? Mesurando gestos y tonos para el equilibrio común, incluso enseñando a nuestros huéspedes. En el tema que nos concierne a diario, la Calidad de Servicio, la agresión acústica es mucho más flagrante, por los modales limitados y en ocasiones desconsiderados del eventual personal. Por ejemplo, al servir los desayunos en un hotel, al conducir un vehículo colectivo o por ejemplo, al mover las maletas. En sociedades como las Escandinavas o Germánicas, tales desmanes sonoros son sancionados de la misma forma que la falta de respeto al medioambiente o a la seguridad de los ciudadanos. Allí la gente es más dada a gozar de la naturaleza, necesitan la tranquilidad y harmonía del medio no contaminado. Los sonidos naturales, tal como dictan los postulados de la filosofía Feng-shui oriental, son muy positivos y edificantes. Incluso fuera de nuestro ámbito, parece no agredir nuestro oído, que las emisoras de radio o televisión suban el volumen sistemática y drásticamente para “invadir” nuestra atención con sus sintonías en las consabidas cuñas publicitarias… La libertad de unos acaba donde empiezan la de los demás, no iba así? Sshhhh!! Queremos espacio para pensar.

Nous Estels al Firmament

Estic enlluernat. No crec que ningú em prengui per desagraït al llegir amb escepticisme els rànquings de publicacions estrangeres, sobre els nous estels a la “volta celeste” de la gastronomia catalana... Penso que els guardons son, en una època de desencís econòmic, molt benvinguts com a recompensa per la feina i la il·lusió exercida per part dels restauradors. Es més, crec que constitueixen un reclam vàlid pel turisme gastronòmic de terres endins, sigui nacional o forà. Ara bé, ningú em negarà que dissortadament es dibuixa (ja de ben abans) un seriós “décalage” o desajust entre l’expectativa que generen aquestes guies gastronòmiques de prestigi i les formes d’aquestes modestes fondes o petits restaurants, posats sota el focus del glamour francòfil. La majoria eren fins no fa res, desconeguts fora de llur comarca; dit això, amb el més evident respecte que cada establiment es mereix. Els aristòcrates de aquesta cuina tan mediàtica –dels quals el sobirà acaba d’anunciar que es retirava temporalment- porten transmetin fa anys, una febre de popularitat i riquesa, difícils d’aturar. Així em temo, ens trobem amb unes poblacions modestes, una decoració espartana, un servei a sala que molt probablement no estigui a la alçada dels preus que aquests estels impulsen... Però de nou i sempre, seran els comensals qui hauran de marcar la pauta i el baròmetre de la Qualitat de Servei. Donat que, si no és així, l’únic que estarem afavorint serà el prestigi excessiu i la veneració del mapa “estelat” i la conseqüent decepció dels clients amants de la cuina i del bon servei. Que poc costa fer bé les coses, amb una mica de sensibilitat i orientació al client!

La Moto, fiel corcel

Siempre soñé de pequeño en poder desplazarme sobre un vehículo ligero, que me permitiera evadirme de los peligros y de lo aburrido de la realidad. Un híbrido entre una bicicleta y una nave espacial… Hasta que no cumplimos los 14 años, a mi hermana y a mí nos compró Papá Jordi un nuevo ciclomotor vasco, después ya en la Uni, me pude comprar mi nueva trail de 650 c.c., qué máquina tan versátil! Ella me paseó hasta el pirineo aragonés y desafió pistas de montaña infranqueables con todo el desparpajo imaginable. La siguiente montura fue una R de segunda mano, la 750 c.c. Jamás había ido tan rápido en 2 ruedas desde el servicio militar; aquel memorable vuelo en una vieja 900 de Burgos a Lérida en menos de 2 horas… En realidad no había conexión aérea! Mi último idilio es desde hace 4 años con una 1000, la más potente de serie habida y por haber. Me siento en plena simbiosis con ella, y a pesar de su poder de despegue devastador, el equilibrio que se genera entre hombre y máquina es la base de la supervivencia de ambos. Así hemos llegado ambos hasta aquí, con el máximo respeto a las normas y el vigor necesario, ello ha hecho mi vida emocionante, al margen de ahorrarme tiempo para entrar cada día en la gran urbe. El verano pasado rodé por carreteras de New-Jersey en una Custom automática, acariciando la idea de recorrer la mítica Route 66 con un grupo de amigos. Ahora, cuando entreveo el conformarme con máquinas menos irascibles, estoy planeando un itinerario por castillos en moto, cual caballeros de antaño, sintiendo el paisaje y rindiendo culto a nuestros antepasados. Está claro que nada se hace tan bien, como aquello que anhelamos, cual sueño de infancia. Motards, a conquistar! Honni soit qui mal y pense.

Calidad de Servicio, en estado Terminal?

Bien, muy bien. Por fin tenemos una nueva ampliación del Aeropuerto del Prat de Barcelona, que nos permitirá disfrutar de amplios espacios, equipos actualizados y un potencial de pasajeros según dicen, de 55 Millones. Genial! Pero… Pregunto, nos sentiremos así al llegar a la nueva instalación, como un número más de la ingente masa viajera que pasará por allí, o por fin estará la calidad del servicio prestada a la par con el entorno? No me gustan los malos augurios, pero al margen de las cifras que se han barajado, desearía saber cuántas de las 3.000 personas empleadas atenderán a estos numerosos y apresurados viajeros? O de qué modo y acorde a qué formación tratarán a este público local que viaja al extranjero? Y al internacional que nos visita? Creo que conviene dejar pasar unos días desde la inauguración (ahora que se ve tan pulcra y estilizada) para que calibremos las cosas en su justa medida. Pero si nos ceñimos al trato dispensado hasta ahora en los aeropuertos gestionados por AENA, bien digamos que, todo parece ir bien hasta que deja de ir. En cuanto surgen retrasos, pérdida de maletas (nuestro aeropuerto ha obtenido varios records en ese sentido), overbookings y demás incidencias habituales, no sólo el servicio sino el personal, brilla por su ausencia. No hablemos de la comunicación que habría de ejercer… Ahora que está todo a punto de arrancar, con el factor humano mejor predispuesto que nunca, que vemos que las empresas involucradas quieren ser diferentes y con un alto nivel de compromiso, pongamos los medios para que los viajeros caseros o foráneos, se vayan (y vuelvan) con un buen sabor de boca. Éste es un llamamiento a los gerentes del nuevo (ampliado) aeropuerto para que piensen en los pequeños detalles para mejorar sus resultados, con la particularidad de que a menudo éstos, no tienen coste alguno. No podemos hacer que por desidia, desinterés o despiste (3D) disminuya la Servucción (Servicio + Producción), que nuestra productividad ya está por los suelos, la crisis lo ha demostrado. Vamos a curarla.

L’Europe, nous y voilà

J’étais en train de lire cette après-midi un texte qui voulait définir ma ville, Barcelone. J’ai réussi à la comprendre d’une façon aussi objective que subjective, étant donnée mon enfance à l’étranger, ainsi que mon éducation à l’école française. Après être né ici, bien d’années se sont passées ailleurs, y retournant plus sédentairement à partir de mes 18 ans. Je tombe alors sur une phrase faite, que l’on entend souvent: « la ville plus européenne du pays », et je me demande, que comprend-on par cela? Comme les élections à notre super-parlement approchent et que, la plupart de nous y prêtons moins d’attention qu’à nos propres élections municipales ou de l’état (ce qui est déjà assez préoccupant)… Je pense que la réflexion en vaut la peine, vu que l’enjeu est considérable.
Quelles sont les valeurs que nous y accordons et est-ce que nous les percevons en cette croissance numérique d’États intégrants? La Paix, la liberté, la prospérité, une société juste, des valeurs et réalités écologiques soutenues, une identité à ne pas perdre, une sécurité de notre entourage, une représentation de nos droits, une bonne éducation, du travail bien rémunéré, de bonnes infrastructures… J’en laisse sûrement. Comme les coutumes, la gastronomie, le paysage architectural, le climat tempéré, en un mot, la culture qui nous unit.
Peut-être serait-il temps, de définir à nouveau d’ou nous venons pour viser juste ou nous voulons aller. Nous y voilà.

The culinary tradition is so deeply rooted in this country, that already before the time of Arzak or Luis Irizar, the Basque chefs have maintained in a very serious and professional manner the love for the stove. Even the “Tamborrada” is a parade, in the heart of the winter that means the maximum expression of the joy and dedication for these people for the art of cooking and enjoying food.
Far away from the international cuisine contests, within the Basque society you can clearly feel the omnipresent good taste for eating and for the healthy fresh ingredients, from the orchard or from the sea. Without too much ornamentation, very much within one’s reach.

Travelling on your own

Isn’t it easy and handy, to be able to click so freely, booking flights, accommodation, restaurants and guides, by the mere wish of our thumb? Do we achieve to obtain the same results than through expert professionals of Tourism? Or even better? It might be cheaper in some cases, much worse in some others. How many times haven’t we been disappointed by a hotel, after great view of a “too idyllic” website, or by low-cost airlines, that charge you for using the toilette! It all seemed so convenient, didn’t it? Definitely for these service sellers who thus require much less staff, but are available 24 hours.
So the answer is no, we can’t say that we’re travelling better than before cyber-info appeared, we just manage to connect with certain things. Others, we find them on site or through the classical channels. Fair enough, there seems to be a quantitative improvement, not qualitative. But it is necessary to point out, that the world of travelling has, during the same period of the Net’s “birth” and “childhood” evolved very much indeed, definitely not only due to the information society. We cruise, we assist to congresses, we are on an incentive travel, we practice adventure sports while away, we follow our team on international tournaments or we attend a fair abroad. What a pleasant variety! On some cases, it has been through the Net that we were aware of them, but we didn’t book it through. No doubt that being on your own, far away from your hometown, becomes safer when you can rely on a email connection, but still many aspects of the fuzzy technology (GPS, mms, cell-phone calls) are too expensive on roaming, aren’t they? Ouch when you get the bill…
So we certainly dispose of many more assets now than before cyber-booking, but can we make it to cover all options we wish/need, and are we happy with the final result when we fly back? Tourism branch provides the necessary means to fulfill any expectation for groups or individuals, and computers just provide data flow… Let the cobbler stick to his last.

¿No hemos aprendido de Él?

No puedo dejar de recordar cuando observo el skyline de ciudades como Barcelona, todo lo que deberíamos haber aprendido de un gran maestro como fue el genial arquitecto de Riudoms… Ni antes ni después del movimiento modernista, se atrevió nadie a tanto e incluso hoy los pocos que tienen una fuente de inspiración parecida, son la excepción que confirma la regla. Los ángulos duros parecen llevar la batuta en el diseño general, los materiales sintéticos y las texturas high-tech revelan ser la piel de los nuevos edificios, dejando en esa frialdad y dura geometría la esencia de las nuevas ciudades… ¿Acaso su genial lección cayó en saco roto después de tantos elogios y reconocimientos universales?
No sé, constato personalmente que después de escepticismos iniciales ante la aportación de estos arquitectos “orgánicos” por cuestiones de localización, o incluso de protagonismo excesivo, me rindo ante la evidencia de que el legado de una arquitectura más benevolente y harmónica con el entorno natural es recogido por muy pocos artistas. Sin duda el argumento principal en contra, será el coste de una tecnología ad-hoc o las coyunturas adversas que hacen tambalear al sistema financiero e inmobiliario, pero rotundamente me niego a considerar mía una arquitectura de corte hostil y perfil tan duro. Por lo menos, respetemos un poco más el patrimonio industrial y embellezcámoslo con vegetación autóctona. No es tan malo restaurar y construir emulando épocas pretéritas, en deuda con un patrimonio nuestro tan notable.
Hagamos edificios que sonrían!!!

La Era de les Rutes Temàtiques

És el primer cop que redacto en aquest espai un article en la meva llengua materna, ja que d’entrada es pretén que aquest sigui un espai multicultural, íntegrament obert al mon del turisme de qualitat. També -com suposeu - els lectors als quals em dirigeixo habitualment, estan ubicats fora de les nostre fronteres, malgrat que també alguns d’ells ens entenen en la llengua de Mossèn Cinto.
Però més enllà i sobretot, la raó és que està dirigit a nosaltres, els Catalans i més concretament a les nostres autoritats turístiques per cridar lis l’atenció sobre un fenomen recent. El que ja feia molt de temps veníem pregonant com el futur del turisme de qualitat, s’està institucionalitzant de manera regular en el sí de les webs de turisme i diputacions, a on s’han fet de les rutes detallades una bandera de la seva feina de màrqueting. Nosaltres ho observem amb goig, però no podem més que considerar – sempre de forma molt constructiva – que aquestes propostes descrites no son més que la enumeració, - sota el denominador comú de un tema inherent a la nostra cultura - dels recursos a l’abast de tothom. Repeteixo, aplaudim la iniciativa però hem d’apuntar que són aquestes idees a emprendre de forma individual, en parella o família, que revesteixen un caràcter poc sostenible, donat que als llocs proposats no s’hi pot arribar sense transport privat. Pensem doncs, reconduint una qüestió que ja es va esmentar per part de especialistes internacionals en el últim congrés de Turisme Cultural a Barcelona (ECTN), que son les empreses especialitzades les que han de jugar en aquí un paper primordial en la divulgació de la cultura a través del turisme. Han de complementar aquesta oferta de qualitat, oferint rutes i experiències terra endins pels de fora, però també pels de casa. La nostre cultura i el nostre turisme s’ho mereixen.

As you know we’ve organized several journeys around the country to let people explore the Fiesta culture, one very present and rich in all our cities and villages, back in the hinterland. That appealing smell...

Nowhere else have I seen such an interest in Chocolate tradition, with a wide variety of shops and a large range of different preparations and combinations: sweet, salty, spicy, all for the pleasure's sake. Many traditional establishments in the heart of the old city apparently sell this precious dark gold since as long as the beginning of the overseas trade. Senior people consume it frequently during afternoon gatherings in its liquid state with the “Xurros”, sort of crispy fritter covered in sugar. It not only cheers one but is also thought to be healthy for the bones… Dark chocolate is said to have these benefits, unlike white or milk chocolate which can tend to be more fattening.
So they say… now, maybe it’s time for indulgence?

A Step Forward Into Our Past

Who hasn’t dreamed of living in a castle at some point in their lives? Most of us have dreamt of travelling back in time to experience living in these mysterious and all-enveloping fortresses. Usually, these can only be visited with a guided tour, but we’ve hunted down those which offer overnight stays and allow us to experience first-hand what everyday life was like inside the castle and how the feudal lords resolved their territorial disputes. We are slowly getting used to this term, newly-branded but compulsory due to EU regulations, that substitutes the old one “Catalan champagne”, and which means sparkling wine made with natural 2nd fermentation in bottle. One says, that it is sometimes better to differentiate from your competitors marketing wise, even if that means starting from scratch. Actually, the Cava elaboration represents the first Catalan export, and in the wine county of El Penedès, it displays a world in its own. Always around the little town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia (Barcelona), we’ll explore the production process of the small-handpicked cellars, since the autochthon vine-trees until the tasting of the best bottles combined with the traditional gastronomy. La mayoría de los blogueros suelen apuntar que la iniciativa de abrir un weblog, la han tomado admitiendo que hacía tiempo que llevaban madurándolo, o incluso justificando el porqué lo hacen... Como si no tuvieran derecho a hacerlo libre e individualmente.
Yo también acabo de empezar en esto y pienso que el poder escribir artículos con repercusión global e interactiva inmediata, es sorprendente y hasta difícil de concebir para mí. El admitir esto es un ejercicio de sinceridad por no dejarme llevar por la cibercultura sobreentendida y como única opción relacional.
Para alguien que ni siquiera es periodista, el tener la posibilidad de alcanzar todos los lectores con opción de réplica y seguimiento me parece de una potencia y alcance inusitados. El espíritu que me guía en este espacio es el de despertar interés sobre el turismo, la calidad hacia la cual nos lleva y el grado de servicio que todos nosotros nos merecemos. Así que adelante, lectores y seguidores en este idioma, me gustaría conocer vuestras inquietudes e ideas en éste ámbito tan interesante y atractivo. Qué tipo de turismo os gusta? Qué opináis de la calidad que ha de revestir? Creéis que el servicio que recibís aquí o allí es correcto?

De entre todos los países Europeos la arquitectura del nuestro es sin duda la que más ha sorprendido en la última década debido a su contundencia conceptual y a la rica combinación de estilos diversos. La mayoría de los arquitectos se pone de acuerdo en decir que nos hemos vuelto un centro internacional del diseño innovador y nos vamos acostumbrando a un paisaje arquitectónico heterogéneo, el cual finalmente define lo que vemos. La reciente exposición en el MOMA de Nueva York es un buen aval de esta aseveración. Si buscamos factores de análisis, probablemente los períodos en los cuales carecíamos de libertad política y espiritual, forzaron a muchos creadores al exilio, lo que actuó como catalizador, renovando fuerzas que han generado más creatividad que nunca. Prior to the 19th century, being a traveller did not only depend on having the right economic resources and a good portion of daring and fearlessness. Sometimes, if the winds didn’t blow adequately, even in our old Europe being so bold could lead us into uncertain destiny... Nevertheless, these hazards didn’t discourage the curious pioneers, luckily. At the beginning of the industrialisation century, some devilish machines appeared boosted by steam energy, that scared many with their terrible noise, but they became the anticipation of modern individual vehicles. The train played a decisive role in the world technological development, and contributes nowadays to the avant-garde of quality travel and is a sustainable transportation besides. Today, we can be whisked from the Mediterranean coast to Castile rapidly, enjoying the landscape and reaching promptly the centre of our main cities. Added to the advantages of this agile communications, we have to consider as well our input as sensitive people in the context of cultural travel. We believe that in the era of velocity, not everything has to fly, and therefore being down-to-earth allows us to discover lovely corners close from here, on a bird’s view, but standing on a branch.. Some of the most legendary routes in the world were followed by the railway, as for instance, based on the rich English merchants on the 18th Century, who departed from London to Venice for widening their cultural views, was born the Orient-Express train as an advance north-south.
